What's In YOUR Lunch? (via FB in July09)

What will be in your lunch?

School is coming soon and I was just thinking about getting ready for it. A girlfriend has a blogging site and her topic of today is packing the perfect lunch. This got me thinking and I tried to post a comment, but couldn't view the verification word, so I decided to post my comment here. Make sure to check out her on FB, Queen of Free and via her site at http://queenoffree.blogspot.com/.

I began packing lunches for my little prince and princess last year, for school. At first, I was excited to buy those pre-packaged lunch snacks that grocers are happy to provide. However, once I realized the cost of those conveniences vs buying in bulk quantities, I had to rethink my tendencies. Now, we each have our own reusable lunch bag! You know, you can find these at your favorite store or from your local Tupperware gal. Some lunch bags contain small perfectly-sized containers and even safe-to-drink-from water bottles! Now, I purchase animal crackers, raisins, carrots, chips, pretzels and other fun kid-friendly side items in the larger quantity. These containers are just the right portion size, so I stuff the container and off the kids go!

As for beverages, I like to send them with juice, water or lemonade in their re-usable water bottle from Tupperware. Even kids know good quality! They prefer their Tupperware bottle over Dora and Diego! (perhaps the snack cup in the bottom of the bottle is the secret ingredient to trumping the cartoon superstars) When you buy frozen juice, you can save quite a bundle!
Whatever reusable lunch system you decide upon, you are making an impact on our environment! It has been estimated that on average a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That equates to 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school.
And if that doesn't convince you, maybe this will. A typical american lunch (disposable and prepackaged) costs an average of $4.06 per day or $723 a year. A disposable lunch averages only $2.65 a day or $477 per year.
I courtsey to you, my fellow Queens and know you will made the choice that works best in your kingdom!
